F A Q
Should all my boards be Brink surferboards?
No, the variety in surfing is beautiful. Design concepts, waves and assembly of elements are diverse. Build a quiver, support dedicated curious avenues. My goal is to build boards that work and last. Boards that bring smiles and that you'll love.
Can I get a board without a circle fabric inlay?
Nope. Every element included in your board is necessary and dependent on one another. This cohesive arrangement is first and foremost. Durability where you sit and stand, weight balance and dampening are some of what the fabric bring.
Are these boards machine shaped?
No. All boards are handmade start to finish.
Can I order multiple boards in one batch?
It's rewarding building a few boards at a time for one surfer. You really get into the vision and needs for someone's surfing. Some people are doing a trip and building a 3 pack with an art direction that ties together, yet stands alone. You don’t have to be on tour to get attention to dialed in equipment. So yes, I welcome batches.
Can I only surf in one direction on these asymmetrical boards?
No, surf left or right. But stand one way. These are stance specific, asymmetrical designs made to help you surf the way you stand.
Why should I trust a hand shape?
It's risky on your part, that’s true. This entire waltz is built on trust. I trust that you are honest with what you need and what you don’t like. You trust me to embrace design and incorporate the hydrodynamic elements that will let you surf as you should.
Will these asymmetrical design changes help my surfing?
Yes, they will help you and are most clearly adjusted to embrace your strong leverage on the toe side, whilst adjusting for the frustrations on the backhand. But these are not silver bullets. You need to work on your technique forever.
Why is my board skew?
Your board is most certainly skew. In fact, it's twisted. When applying the most subtle of changes in various elements of a craft, together they can achieve the biggest and most dependent changes. The small boards usually have an applicable change of the following: twisted rocker, off-set wide points, shorter heel side outline, fin positions, graduated stance foils and exaggerated exit flows.
How long must I let my board cure for before riding?
I surf them the same day.
How strong are these boards?
Choosing premium products and assembling things in a consistent manner is imperative. It's time consuming and yet when all said and done, serves to make things work and last. I could certainly make a stronger board, but they would lack liveliness and ping. We could make them surprisingly lighter too and then risk them failing way too soon. It's a balance of strength to sensation ratio at play. Boards need to feel comfortable and bring smiles time and time again. Look after your board and it can last longer than you are used to.
What is the resonant frequency you specify in my board?
Over the years it's been fascinating building, riding, holding and feeling boards day in and day out. Beyond the design experimentation alone. There is a sound and feel to a board. Every board. The ones you love often tend to be in this higher frequency “pingy' category. I started measuring and charting these frequencies. It was insightful and yet only part correct. The resonance seems to be a bigger congruent feature with the favorites. To sum things up, light, tight, and right. Keeps them surfing well and sounding right.
Is my technical ability always going to outweigh design benefits?
Yes, technique will always override design changes. Surfing is difficult. Boards that let you do the right thing are important. Boards that make you do the right thing can be game changing. But the biggest thing is you and your relationship with the sea. Great boards bring these things together and can help you cultivate your fascination with the sea.
Do you only glass boards with epoxy?
Yes. Whilst some designs demand the polyester blanks options, all boards are laminated with epoxy. All premium American made products.
Are asymmetrical boards a category or a design application?
Considering it as a design application helps one define the changes made and how they serve to affect change. It lets you see a board and imagine the application of continued design.
Should all boards be asymmetrical?
Small ones, sure .
Do you only make asymmetrical surfboards?
No.
Do you ride other peoples surfboards?
Yes, good boards are great fun and enjoying other peoples designs and constructions is amazing.
Why does my stringer not go all the way through my board?
The “drop-in” stringers were incorporated over time. When looking closely at any old favorite in a quiver, the first failings popped up in the spine deck line. The traffic areas where you constantly sit and stand. Many boards are stringer-less and designed to be so. When incorporating stringers, I map them out within the planned shape and let them graduate into the curve and then fade out again. This eliminates any abrupt start/stop points and keeps the deck line free of the hard-line-spine potential. It’s really fun to be able to control the depth and even adjust the rocker on glue ups.
Will you recommend fins for my board?
Yes. All boards are designed around specific fins.
What’s the volume of my board?
Volume is considered, yet not calculated.
How do I order a Brink Board?
Fill out the order form. Think about what you really need. Be honest with the things that frustrate you. I’ll put together a drawing and some thoughts as we begin the design process and work toward something you will love and enjoy. The goal is to have you doing good surfing, comfortably.
What’s up with the musical reference in the order process?
It's about getting in tune with your vibe for the project and your vision for this board. Color is so important, the frequency that’s received by our eyes so compelling. Music does similar things, the frequency moving through our ears. Imagine this: two orders, both choosing blue/green for a color palette. Enter the music: Black Sabbath for one, NoFx for the other. So even though the color palette is the same, the musical choices take me to two very different places in the overall design and aesthetic feeling for the boards. This is your board and I want you to love it. There are restrictions that apply due to the cohesive elements and aesthetics at play. Just trust me. Yes, once again, it's about trust. I listen to every album and it becomes a soundtrack to the works flow.
Why aren’t pros competing on these boards or other asym?
Not everything is a competition. Designs that work and bring you joy will be your favorite. At the highest level of ability and polished technique, pros need subtle changes. It's the most exciting time in surfing, seeing, sharing and shaping these changes together.
I love this board can I order another one?
Every essential measurement is documented along the way. This allows us to get right back to the mapped out plan shape, within a ball-point pens accuracy. Thereafter, going about building it once again. There is a flow to crafting anything. If you engage in this every time you can get dependable results.
Are these boards sustainably built?
Every effort toward sustainability is considered. This is a low volume, handmade operation, so things add up beneficially pretty quickly. EPS being recyclable is a big start. This puts us in an epoxy glass realm. Promoting durability and strength. Manufacturing footprint is a big piece of the pie when it comes to production (according to LCA via Sustainable Surf Study) With a couple eight foot LED lights, Skil 100 hand planer, dust collectors and a vacuum; things are pretty simple which really helps this cause.
Why are these boards so expensive?
The good news is there are cheap boards you can go surfing on. Choosing a hand made option, with all top quality American made products is premium. Nothing that would take you this long to build would be defined by price. Things are set up to be fair and treasured.
